Contaminated Salads Sickened 163 People at McDonalds

163 people across 10 states have become ill from tainted McDonald’s salads. Three of the sick have been hospitalized. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said the illnesses were caused by a Cyclospora parasite that is commonly transmitted in foods contaminated with fecal matter.

The number of individuals infected jumped significantly since last week, when the number of cases was just 61 across seven states. As of last week, the reported cases were in #Illinois#Iowa#Missouri#Minnesota#Nebraska#SouthDakota, and #Wisconsin.

McDonald’s said last week they have stopped selling salads out of caution in the states with reported illnesses. The company said in a statement:

“McDonald’s is committed to the highest standards of food safety and quality control. We are closely monitoring this situation and cooperating with state and federal public health authorities as they further investigate.”

Cyclospora parasite causes the illness known as Cyclosporiasis, and is rarely fatal. The infection can cause severe nausea, fatigue, and diarrhea for more than a week.
